Mini guide to Compiegne
Compiegne
The town and forests of Compiegne were cherished by French royalty for centuries. Louis XIV came here to hunt, Louis XV built a château, here and Napoleon (along with his progeny) turned it into the city it is today.
The architectural highlight of Compiegne is its château, built during the rule of Louis XV and later refurbished by Napoleon. Long before the royal residence was built, Compiegne was a popular summer home for French royalty. Napoleon made the castle his own, giving a significant 19th century feel to the layout.
Today, the château is open to the public and houses the Museum of the Second Empire along with the National Automotive Museum. Another local museum catalogues the on-off relationship between France and the United States.
The armistice that effectively ended WWI was signed in a railcar in the forest north of Compiegne. The act was summarily reversed in 1940 after a second armistice when France was signed into Nazi occupation during WWII. Several memorials and monuments are found in the forest, including the Alsace-Lorraine Memorial (celebrating the end of Nazi occupation) and a statue of Ferdinand Foch.
Compiegne receives regular trains from Paris (roughly one hour away) and Amiens (90 minutes away). Local transportation consists primarily of city buses, which are free to the public on weekdays and non-holidays. During peak tourist and holiday times, having a hire car becomes important.
