Collecchio is a town in the province of Parma, which is home to the Parmalat dairy company. Parma has 47 municipalities, Collecchio being one. Parma is in the region of Emilia-Romagna (the capital city of which is Parma). Emilia-Romagna is one of the 20 regions in Italy, and is the second richest region in Italy.
Emilia-Romagna boasts the most characteristic cuisine, too, so the region is well worth a visit while touring Collecchio. The region is bordered by the Adriatic Sea, the Rover Po, and the Appenine Mountain range, making the entire region a rough rectangle, with the two long sides almost parallel.
The main industries in Emilia-Romagna include agriculture (cereals, maize, potatoes, tomatoes and onions), with fruit and grapes for wine making being almost as important as these. Automotive names are also immersed in the region – Ducati, Ferrari and Lamborghini are three companies that base themselves in Emilia-Romagna (Ferrari is actually the most common surname in Collecchio!). The capital of Emilia-Romagna is Bologna.
Just out of Collecchio at Parma is the Battistero, a Baptistry situated just next to the Cathedral in Parma. Inside, the double baptismal font can be dated back as far as the 1200s. It also houses frescoes from the 1300s. Also in Parma is the Biblioteca Palatina, founded in 1761 and home to 700 000 volumes, many of them early works.
Certainly worth a visit for the bibliophile! Parma has many interesting and historic places, and at just over six miles from Collecchio, you can afford to go to and from as many times as you like over the course of a day.
