Situated in central France, Clermont Ferrand is ringed by a chain of dormant volcanoes that once dominated the landscape. The cityscape is marked by its Gothic cathedral, which owes its obsidian black colour to locally-sourced volcanic stones.
The principle city of Auvergne and the capital of its department, Clermont Ferrand is best known for the industrial success of the Michelin Tire company which is based here. While the Clermont Ferrand Cathedral is the city's most commanding landmark, there is another local church that deserves plenty of attention. The Romanesque Notre-Dame du Port is considerably older than its counterpart and it was nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Construction began in 1,000 years ago, and its bell tower was renovated in the 1800s.
Other tourist attractions include the 16th century Fontaine d'Amboise along with the bronze effigy of the ancient Gaul general, Vercingetorix, in the public square. The Puy-de-Dôme is the tallest of the dead volcanoes, and a network of hiking trails emanating from a café greets visitors at its summit.
The city recently added a tramline to supplement public transportation between some of the key attractions. Generally, travel to the volcano or to the Gothic and Renaissance neighbourhoods of nearby Montferrand requires the use of a hire car.
