Located in the region of Marche, in the province of Macerata, is the municipality of Civitanova Marche. It is believed to have been settled in the 8th century BC by the people of the Piceni Italic tribe, before it was taken by the Romans in 268 BC. Nowadays, though, it is a well known holiday spot for tourists, so make sure you spend some time relaxing on the Adriatic coast in this pretty place.
The region of Marche is one of the 20 regions of Italy, and the name refers to the March of Ancona. It is bordered by the areas of Tuscany and Umbria amongst others, and the land is quite hilly (apart from the parts close to the sea, north of Ancona, and the areas of valleys). The most northern river in Marche is the Foglia, and flows into the Adriatic Sea after passing through Pesaro (the ancient Pisaurum) and was known long ago as the Pisaurus.
Maraceta is one of the five provinces in Marche, and the capital city is also known as Maraceta. There are 57 municipalities (of which Civitanova Marche is one) in Maraceta. Civitanova Marche is found at the mouth of the Chienti River, and began its current life as Cluentis Vicus (nowadays the village of Civitanova Alti), and later the original town settled by the Piceni people was destroyed, and many of the population took shelter in Cluentis Vicus.
In 1440, new walls and a fortress were built, although the town became under attack externally from pirates, and internally from the plague and fighting within the city walls. In 1551 the city came under new owners who attempted to repair living conditions, as well as the walls. Unfortunately, things did not improve. Thank goodness they have now!
