Ciutadella, a city and small port on the island of Menorca, lies off the eastern coast of Spain in the Mediterranean Sea. This is a town of excellence, a cradle of culture, which opens the doors of its traditional hospitality.

Situated at the head of a narrow and shallow arm of the sea, surrounded by flat, arid land, this area contains many stone reminders of the prehistoric people who once occupied Menorca and other islands in the western Mediterranean.

Ciutadella still retains much of the Moorish influence and has an attractive port surrounded by narrow, arcaded streets. Beautiful old palaces, churches and noble buildings can also be seen today in the city centre, once surrounded by massive defensive walls. As you wander around, you will also find the Naveta des Tudons; the taules and talaiots, the caves and the prehistoric villages like the ones at Cala Morell or Son Catlar.

The quaint narrow harbour is a delightful postcard scene, perfect for an idle afternoon lunch. One of best places to view the harbour is from the main square, Plaza de's Born. On one side of the square is the town hall and across from this is the Palace Torre Saura. The Fiesta de San Juan, which takes place here at the end of June, is not to be missed.

You are never far from the coast on this island, but the small villages inland are typically Mediterranean, and best explored by car, together with a compulsory trip to Mount Toro the highest point on the island. Nearby is the naveta (prehistoric tomb) of Els Tudons, the largest and best preserved of its kind. There are also the excellent beaches of Cala Santandria, Algañares, Cala Blanca and Cala Blanes.

Menorca’s Mao Airport can be reached from any major Spanish International Airport, as well as many European cities, and there are even connections directly to Ciutadella. Once on Menorca, various transportation options are available into the town itself.
