Around Cincinnati are a number of enticing areas and attractions that can be reached by car. The Corryville district, near the University of Cincinnati, is a fashionable area permeated with coffee shops, cafés and clubs appealing to the student set. On the university campus is the enormous Burnet Park, where numerous scenic nature trails can be found. The Skirball Museum at the Hebrew Union College Jewish Institute of Religion near campus has fascinating displays documenting Jewish history and culture.
Covington, Kentucky is located on the other side of the Ohio River opposite Cincinnati. Its attractions include a collection of century-old rowhouses, quaint antique shops and a wide range of restaurants. Also located here is Covington Landing, a unique floating shopping centre by day and a popular entertainment spot by night.
Newport Aquarium, also situated in Kentucky, is a fabulous, modern development with over 7,000 marine animals of over 600 species. See-through floors, underwater tunnels and a 380,000-gallon shark tank all feature in this phenomenal complex.
Kings Island, situated 40kms away from the city centre, is a massive family amusement park containing 12 rollercoasters, including the worlds longest wooden rollercoaster, known as The Beast.
History buffs should make their way to Milford, east of Cincinnati, where superb examples of 19th century buildings can be found in abundance. Be sure to visit the 1812 Millcroft Inn, a particularly good example of olden day architecture.
The town of Dayton, under an hour from Cincinnati, is famed as the site of the first experimental efforts at flight undertaken by the Wright brothers. Today it is a fitting home to the US Air Force Museum, the largest of its kind in the world, where you can view phenomenal historical displays and state-of-the-art exhibits. An additional Dayton attraction is the McPherson Town Historic District, where you can take a pleasant stroll past restored shops and ancient houses.
