Driving in New Zealand is a breeze due to the distinct lack of congestion on rural roads. There are some truly spectacular sights in and around the Christchurch area. Cruise Lyttelton Harbour and catch a glimpse of one of the world's rarest and smallest dolphins, the Hector dolphin. The harbour is only a 15-minute drive from the city.

A drive around the cartwheel-like Banks Peninsula to the east of Christchurch is an absolute must. Many visitors overlook this wonderful region, clad with picturesque fishing villages and awash with magnificent views. The view of the main harbour village of Akaroa from the hilly approach roads in either direction is breathtaking.

Inland from Christchurch and only an hour from the city are the imposing Southern Alps. The village of Arthur’s Pass makes an ideal base for all kinds of activities from skiing to helicopter tours.

South of Christchurch lie the Ashburton and Timaru districts. Ashburton district is home to all kinds of exciting activities such as skiing, hot-air ballooning and salmon fishing; while Timaru district features many attractive towns, rolling green hills, lush pastures and braided rivers.

Two hours north of Christchurch is Kaikoura, where the mountains meet the sea, and one of the few places where you can see the giant sperm whale. Swimming with Dusky dolphins is also very popular.

Groups of tourists wearing wetsuits and snorkelling gear are taken out and dropped off in front of pods of dolphins (up to 400 at a time) to meet these marvellous animals. Being the most acrobatic of their kind, they always put on a good show.

On the trip back to Christchurch, head inland to Hanmer Springs, a scenic alpine and thermal village. You can enjoy nature or adventure activities here. Alternatively, lazing in the hot pools is a great way to relax after sightseeing all day. About 80kms south of here, in the Hunrunui district, you can enjoy the wineries of Waipara before heading back into the big city.
