Chieti is the capital of the province of Chieti, situated 200 km northeast of Rome. Few kilometres separate the city from the Adriatic Sea cost and the mountains of Gran Sasso and Maiella.
Chieti is one of the oldest cities in Italy, found 500 years before Rome. The legends narrated that Achilles established the settlement and called it Teate in the honour of his mother. Today the hero is represented at the municipality coat of arms.

St. Giustino is the first bishop of Chieti. There is indeed a historical record from which to draw detailed information about his life. Most of the relics of the saint are still venerated in an urn placed in the crypt of the cathedral. Subject of a particular ancient veneration is the Holy Arm, which the popular devotion attributed many miracles.
Another place to visit in Chieti is the National Archaeological Museum. You may see there the statue called “Capesrtano Warrior”, which is the best existing sample of archaic sculpture.
