Exploring Chicago

Not far from the ‘Windy City’ are some great trails which are best reached by car and give great insights into the history of this often politically significant hub of the mid-west.

Lincoln Home is the one-time home of Abraham Lincoln, the only home he ever owned. The ex-President lived here until his election in 1861.

The Illinois and Michigan Canal, completed in 1848, connected the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River watershed along a longstanding Indian portage route. It rapidly transformed Chicago from a small settlement to a critical transportation hub between the East and the developing Midwest. The towpath trail along the canal is a state park that runs through a rural and wooded landscape.

The Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail celebrates the expedition of the Corps of Discovery who, in 1804, started near what is now known as Wood River, reaching the Pacific Ocean in 1805. It is approximately 3,700 miles long and passes through portions of Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.
