Located on Prince Edward Island, the attractive city of Charlottetown is one of Canada's greatest historical places. It's here where the founders of the country met in 1864 to unionize all of British North America. Charlottetown is full of historic buildings and natural wonders, and the congeniality of the locals makes the city an enjoyable place to visit.
At the Province House National Historic Site, you can visit the halls where the Fathers of Confederation once worked to unite Canada. The Confederation Centre of the Arts, an art gallery and museum, displays the work of Canada's famed artists. There's also a theatre where you can see plays, musicals and comedies built into the centre.
At the pleasant waterfront, you can stroll along the boardwalk that stretches from Founders' Hall to Confederation Landing. On your way, you'll find a host of small boutiques and cafés. The Beaconsfield historic house dates back from 1877 and is considered to be an archetypal example of Victorian architecture. With 15 hectares of gorgeous parkland encompassing the house, it's worth taking a full day to visit.
In the summer, Charlottetown comes alive with festivals. The Atlantic Superstore Festival of Lights, a massive three-day celebration that commemorates Canada's birthday, takes place from June 28 to July 1. At the end of August, visitors can enjoy the annual Festival of the Fathers, during which the events of the Victorian era are re-enacted at the actual sites where they occurred.
VIA Rail and Amtrak rail operators offer services from Montreal to Moncton, New Brunswick, with connecting bus service to Charlottetown, PEI. Travel to Charlottetown by air is possible from the Canadian cities of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Montreal, Quebec and Toronto. Air Canada Jazz, Air Canada and JetsGo are the air service providers to the island. Prince Edward Air offers corporate charter air service to and from the island. Northumberland Ferries depart from Caribou, Nova Scotia to Wood Islands, PEI about every hour and a half.
