Castres
Castres is a predominantly industrial city in the Languedoc department in southwestern France. It is the third largest centre of industry in the region after Tarbes and Toulouse.
The town grew quickly as it was the only industrial centre in the region in the 18th century, producing mostly works of artisans, weavers and tanners. The shops where these goods were produced can still be seen today hanging over the Agout River.
Despite Castres’ continued growth until today, the traditional shops and houses have mostly remained, with the mills and now factories kept to the outside of the historical centre. In 1815, the first mechanised wool-mill was built in Castres, assuring the city’s textile industry was also to flourish.
These days the local economy is more dependent on modern wares, such as mechanical and engineering products, but some traditions have advanced with the times, like leather dressing and tanning.
For a town based in industry, it might come as a bit of a surprise to know that the largest collection of Spanish paintings in France, after the Louvre of course, is held in the Goya Museum. Besides the Goya collection, other famous names in Spanish art contribute to the allure of the place, such as Velasquez and Murillo.
Located less than 60 miles (100kms) from Toulouse, it’s an easy drive in your car rental and parking is widely available. Accommodation is also relatively easy to obtain, but it’s best to shop around after your arrival for the best prices in the town centre.
