A small Portuguese city and a municipality in Centro region, Castelo Branco boasts a cosy atmosphere and relaxing ambiance amid beautiful architecture. The city is home to the famous polytechnic institute of higher education, Instituto Politicnico de Castelo Branco, and a large student community adds vibrancy to the otherwise peaceful town.
Exuding old world charms, Castelo Branco features several historical wonders. Not to be missed is the Palace of Bishop and the Jardim Episcopal where you can observe exquisite Baroque stonework and statues as well as replicas of objects and animals. The restored walls of the 16th century castle still guard the city today.
The Palace of Bishop also houses the Francisco Tavares Proenca Junior Museum, showcasing miraculous pieces of silk-embroidered bedspreads from many parts of the region. These bed covers, known as colchas, have been made in the area for more than a hundred years, representing the fine craftsmanship of the locals.
There aren’t too many other things to see apart from these remarkable venues in Castelo Branco so travelling to the nearby cities in your car hire is a good idea. Castelo Novo and Alpedrinha, to the north of Castelo Branco, feature a number of well-preserved palaces while the town of Covilha is home to a famous mountain park area.
For a small town feel, visit the lovely village of Monsanto in your rental car. Walk along the cobbled streets and look at small houses and buildings built out of granite stone. Idanha-a-Velha boasts thick Roman walls and a restored 16th century church.
