Nestled in the Province of Alessandria is the town of Casale Monferrato, in the region of Piedmont. Located on the banks of the River Po at the foothills of the Monferrato, Casale Monferrato’s town centre is known as Piazza Mazzini, named for Guiseppe Mazzini. The square is locally called Piazza Cavallo, where ‘cavallo’ is Italian for horse. This is due to a large 1843 statue of Carlo Alberto, the King of Piedmont-Sardinia. Alberto is dressed as a Roman senator, riding a horse, and the statue was commissioned by the municipal authorities as thanks to the King for having selected Casale Monferrato as a site for the second court of appeal (in some sense a restoration of the old Senate of Monferrato) and also to commemorate the building of the first permanent bridge over the Po.
Via Lanza (‘Lanza Street’), which runs from the Piazza, is well known for the Krumiri Rossi Bakery, which makes the Krumiri biscuits made famous in 1870 when they were first baked by Domenico Rossi after he and several friends partook in coffee in the Piazza’s Caffa della Concordia (now a bank). The Piazzo Castello is used as a market square and car park, and is overshadowed by the castle of the Paleologi. When part of the castle’s fortifications were removed in 1858 the square was created, and expanded when the remaining fortifications were removed in the late 1800s/early 1900s.
The center of the town is peppered by palaces, which although in appearance Baroque, are often from earlier times. Several palazzi dated to the 1400s, among them the palazzo of Anna d'Alençon, in Via Alessandria, and Palazzo Trevisio in Via Trevigi. Many events are held annually in Casale Monferrato. Saint Joseph’s Fair is every March, and the festival of Rice and Roses follows in May. September sees the Festival of Wine and the Monferrato, and the Magiche Figure (puppet show). Piazza Castello also holds a market every Tuesday and Friday.
