A naturally beautiful location, Cargése remains very true to its Greek heritage, where many of the descendants of the very first colonists retain their original Greek names, such as 'Timigokis' and 'Drakakis', as do the streets, with names such as 'Rue de Greece' and 'Rue de Magne'.

The Roman Catholic church and the Greek Orthodox church face one another, and this really denotes how the rest of Cargése rests, a fusion of two cultures. The Catholic Church dates back to 1825 when construction first started, but repairs had to be undertaken countless times over the following decades as the church was inundated by natural disasters. The present church has a two-sided chapels in a semi-circular shape, all decorated with murals depicting choirs, which continues its neo-classical flavour even into the cornices and ornamental mouldings.

The Greek Church is of note for anyone interested in religious art, as it contains four icons that were brought from Greece in 1676. One depicts a Byzantine image of the Virgin with Jesus in her arms and it is often taken around the town in holy processions. The second shows the Three Elders: Saint Basil, Saint Gregory and Saint John Chrysostom. The third is an image of Saint John the Baptist who bares the wings of an angel; finally, the fourth shows the Entombment of Christ.

If you are more of the adventuring type, hire a car (see below) and travel to the beach of Pero for some windsurfing and mountain biking, or head down to the Mare e Monti hiking trail that consists of ten stages and is a healthy and challenging way to enjoy the surroundings of Cargése.
