Mini guide to Carcassonne

Designated as a World Heritage Site, Carcassonne’s treasure trove of ancient architecture, magnificent scenery and traditional atmosphere makes it one of the most visited destinations in France.

The Carcassonne area is renowned for its spectacular medieval Cathar castles, still standing silently sentinel over the region. Like something out of a fairytale, they mystify and intrigue visitors with their towering turrets, impenetrable walls and unassailable defensive positions. Montsegur Castle is the epitome of the Cathar type. Situated on a 1200 meter-high mastiff, it dominates the surrounding countryside and affords spectacular views. Arques, Termes, Villerouge-Termenes, Lastours and Minerve are all legendary castles dating back to the time of the Catholic-Cathar Crusades, and have their own unique but often tragic history.

Carcassonne itself boasts the Count’s Castle, a 13th century masterpiece of military construction. The city was divided in two for centuries as a result of the Crusades. The Cite, centered around the citadel, was converted to the Catholic religion following its conquering, while on the opposite bank of the Aude River, the newer Lower Town was a refuge for the former Cathar count’s family. This accounts for the difference in atmosphere you can find still to this day by walking through the ancient streets of the two districts. Explore the Canal du Midi, built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, and discover some beautiful scenic spots along its length. Alternatively, search the nearby countryside for ancient walled ‘circular’ villages situated on hilltops, or experience sights of religious significance such as Fanjeaux-Prouille, Fonfroide Abbey, Camon and Naurouze.

Numerous quaint cafes and charming restaurants line the streets of Carcassonne, and first-class accommodation is easily found.

Nearby, there are several historically important towns, each with its own individual character, namely Narbonne, Enserune, Collioure, Salses and Beziers, site of the infamous massacre of the Cathar ‘heretics’.

Toulouse International Airport is the nearest airport serving direct international flights. Many visitors usually arrive in Paris and find their way to Carcassonne via the efficient and fast French rail system.
