Car Hire Canefield - Mini guide to Canefield

Canefield is a small village to the north of the Dominican capital, Roseau, in the south of the island. The oldest estate houses were built in the south of the island where the French settlers from Martinque made their first investments in property. The money was mostly spent on coffee and sugar production and it is still possible to see the ruins of these buildings and the impressive aqueduct arches that carried water to the mills. The Canefield Estate Old Mill was the last factory in Dominica to produce sugar and it is now the headquarters of the Cultural Department. The Old Mill Cultural Centre is one of the sites of the World Creole Music Festival and it is also one of the island’s major dance clubs, playing reggae, disco and other music from 10pm to 5am.

The island of Dominica is famous for its diving and water sports. In a scuba diving magazine poll it came top for marine life, healthiest marine environment and was the third most popular diving destination. The Scotts Head Sourfriere Marine Reserve is situated on the south-western tip of the island. This reserve includes the villages of Scotts Head and Soufriere and extends to Anse Bateau, near the village of Ponte Michel. This is one of the most beautiful bays, both above and below water, on the island.

Whale watching is another popular activity where many of these animals can be seen off Scotts Head, Roseau, Layou and Point Round. Sperm whales, pilot whales, pygmy whales and dolphins are all seen regularly in the waters off Dominica. The peak season for seeing whales is November to June, but there is a good chance of seeing them at any time of the year. This has made Dominica the ‘Whale Watching Capital of the Caribbean’.

Most car rental firms are located in Roseau but it is possible to hire a car at Canefield airport. Hiring a car is the best way of seeing the island and this is especially so if you want to take advantage of the many outdoor activities that Dominica has to offer.

You will need to purchase a licence that will allow you to drive on the island for one month.
