Car Hire Canefield Airport - Mini guide to Canefield Airport
Canefield airport is a ten minute drive from the capital city of Dominica, Roseau. It is one of only two airports that serve the island, the other being Melville Hall; neither airport operates any night flights. The runway is only 3,100 feet long and it accommodates small aircraft offering intra-regional flights. This airport is closest to most of the tourist attractions than Melville Hall and as a result of this it has largely overtaken that airport in importance.
The island of Dominica is famous for its unspoiled beauty and the richness of its flora and fauna. For those interested in outdoor pursuits it has a wealth of opportunities. Novice hikers can enjoy a fifteen minute walk to the Trafalgar Falls, offering dense rainforests, cascading waterfalls, warm pools and streams. For a more challenging hike you can try the trails to Victoria Falls or the Middleham Falls and for experienced hikers, who want a longer route, there is the Boiling Lake Hike. The trail starts at 1,600 feet and then climbs steeply to the Boiling Lake. The Boiling Lake is a flooded fumarole, (a crack in the earth’s crust through which gases escape from the molten lava below).
For those interested in more cultural activities, Dominica boasts some fine examples of Caribbean architecture. The architecture reflects a strong French influence as well as some English and Spanish influences. A number of buildings survive from colonial times and the typical wood-framed residences known as Ti Kaz are worth visiting. Some of the larger examples have courtyards.
If you travel to Dominica in February or March then you can take part in the Dominican Carnival or ‘the Real Mas’.
There are a number of companies that offer car rental in Dominica and they will drop off and pick up cars at Canefield airport. Hiring a car is the best and most economical way of travelling around the island. If you are intending to travel to some of the more inaccessible areas, where buses rarely go, it is worth paying a bit extra to get a 4x4 vehicle.
You will also need to purchase a licence that will allow you to drive on the island for one month.
