Car Hire Cancun - Mini guide to Cancun
One of the best known and most popular travel destinations in Mexico, Cancun features pristine beaches, turquoise waters, high quality accommodation and a vibrant nightlife. Additionally, the city has the unique advantage of having modern amenities while being surrounded by an ancient culture and nearby heritage sites.
Most people visit Cancun for its pristine tropical beaches, and two of the most popular public beaches are Playa Tortugas and Chacmool. South of Chacmool are the less crowded beaches of Playa Marlin and Playa Delfines.
The colours, shallow reefs and diversity of marine life make Cancun one of top resorts worldwide for scuba diving and snorkelling. Of particular note is the Gran Acerife Maya (Great Mesoamerican Reef), which is one of the largest reefs in the world.
Additionally, there are plenty of outdoor activities on offer, including water sports. Laguna Nichupe, to the west of Cancun, offers sailing, jet-skiing, windsurfing and other water sports. Deep-sea fishing is also a popular activity here. Other activities include visits to spas, horseback or all terrain vehicle riding, and golfing. Opposite the El Pueblito hotel lies the Ruins of the King, which has been incorporated into the Caesar Park Beach and Golf Resort complex.
The Museo Arqueológico de Cancun, a small but interesting museum with relics from archaeological sites around the state, is worth a visit. Also, the Casa de Cultura hosts local cultural events such as art exhibits, dance performances, plays and concerts throughout the year.
Cancun offers a wealth of shopping opportunities. The main street of Avenida Tulum contains a multitude of shops and restaurants. Ki Huic is the largest crafts market in the city, while Avenida Yaxchilán is a great place to bargain for local goods.
