Car Hire in Canberra - Getting to Canberra
Canberra's airport is about 7km east of the city. It is a domestic airport only. Flights arrive here from all capital cities as well as from most towns in New South Wales, although many inevitably stopover in Sydney or Melbourne en route.
From the airport, a shuttle bus runs to the Jolimont Centre in town and to various hotels, costing about A$5. Taxis are also available and cost A$7.
The citys railway station is based on the south side of the lake in Kingston. From here trains run direct to Sydney stopping at most major towns on the way. Combined bus-train trips to Melbourne are available and help to break up the otherwise massive journey a little bit.
Interstate buses arrive at the Jolimont Centre, which is in Civic. Buses run from Canberra to Sydney, Adelaide and Melbourne, with easy connections to all capital cities. Buses can also be caught to the south coast, the snowfields and throughout NSW.
For motorists, The Hume Highway runs between Melbourne and Sydney, passing about 50km north of Canberra. You connect with it by driving to Goulburn or Yass, depending on whether you're heading north or south. To the south the Monaro Highway will take you to Cooma, the snowfields of the Snowy Mountains, and the coast.
