Geography Canada
Situated north of the USA, and bound by the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, Canada is the world's second largest country some 7700 kms across and 4600 from top to bottom. The land is made up of extensive lakes and forests as well as incredible mountains, plains and even a small desert. The Great Plains, or prairies, cover Manitoba, Saskatchewan and parts of Alberta. This is where most of the wheat crop is grown. Western Canada is famous for its Rocky Mountains, while the east has the country's major cities and Niagara Falls - a much visited attraction. The north is a rocky, glacially sanded region with the Arctic regon in the far north covered in ice-bound islands for most of the year. Most of the population live in a narrow band along its southern border, and access to the wilderness of the north is often restricted.
Canada has an astounding array of native flora and fauna. It comprises eight vegetation zones, most of which are dominated by forest. You will find grizzly, black, brown and polar bears and many other wild animals freely roaming in their inhabitats, as well as over 500 species of birds. Canada has 39 national parks, 145 national historic sites and 13 areas of such geographical importance that they are on the UN World Heritage list.
