Mini guide to Cambrai
Cambrai
Cambrai is a city in northeastern France, skirting the border with Belgium. During the Middle Ages, the archdiocese that ruled the region held tenure over a large part of the Low Countries, nowadays referred to as the Benelux: Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.
Like other cities that find themselves in the middle of the French and Flemish cultures, the city has a very interesting architectural style, mixing typically French stone buildings with the Flemish love for bricks and gables.
During the Merovingian period, Cambrai began to grow due to its successful textile industry, which still continues today. Tourists visiting Cambrai can find all sorts of traditional patterns and motifs especial to the area.
Unfortunately the French Revolution didn’t spare Cambrai, and many of its citizens were sent to the Guillotine for their lowlands philosophies. Another gruesome part of the city’s history is that Cambrai was the first city during WWI where tanks were successfully utilised in battle.
Thankfully, the city has some more pleasurable traditions, due to the fertile farmland that surrounds it. Betises de Cambrai is a popular snack throughout France, and there is an annual festival that celebrates the city’s culinary savoir faire.
The best way to reach Cambrai is by hire car, and once in town motorists will find a good amount of parking spaces, both public and as part of hotels. It’s best to book your rental car before you depart, to save yourself time and money.
