Car Rental Cagliari - Exploring Cagliari
The southeastern coast of Sardinia is often referred to as the Gulf of Angels, due to a local legend about a group of angels who came down to earth and chose this spot as the nearest thing to paradise. In the legend, their arrival upset Lucifer, who came to do battle with the angels. During the fight he threw his saddle across a nearby mountain that is now known as Devils Saddle.
Just a short drive from the centre of Cagliari, the beach of Poetta is the longest beach on the gulf (11kms) and is definitely worth a visit. Also located near Cagliari is Sanluris castle, a fortress constructed in the 13th century and the former home of members of the Italian aristocracy. These days it functions as a museum honouring the famous people of Sardinian history.
The terrain inland from Cagliari is very rugged, making for some spectacular scenery and constantly changing views. For example, motorway SS131 crosses Sette Fratelli (Seven Brothers) park, which includes the Serpeddi mountains and is very popular among trekkers.
Traces of ancient civilizations have been found here, and thus there are many archaeological sites of interest in the region. One such area is around Muravera, where several megalithic complexes have been found, dating back to around 5000 BC.
