Car Hire in Caen Rail Station
Mini guide to Caen Rail Station
Caen Rail Station
Known as the battleground of the Battle of Caen in 1944, this lively college town in the Normandy region is now a destination offering both historical interest and modern entertainment.
The only train station, known as Gare Calvados or Gare de l’Ouest, is a convenient stop along the Paris–Cherbourg route. Both regional and inter-city routes run through this station, including lines to Normandy and Paris, Cherbourg, Deauville, Bayeux, and other cities. The Paris–Cherbourg route leaves the Gare Saint-Lazare in Paris every two hours to make the two-hour journey to Caen.
Caen Rail Station was built in 1855, which is appropriate in a town known for its history. Though over three-quarters of the city were destroyed in the battle of 1944, several historical buildings remain among the reconstruction. Tourists who wish to pay their respects to the victims of WWII frequently visit Normandy, and Caen’s Memorial for Peace Museum is a popular attraction.
Other interesting sights include the Caen Castle, built by William the Conqueror, and l’Abbaye aux Hommes and l’Abbaye aux Dames (Abbey of Gentlemen and Abbey of Ladies, respectively).
Visitors are encouraged to consider car hire, as there are several interesting sights in the area that are most conveniently reached by car.
