Butzbach is situated in the German state of Hesse, in the Wetteraukreis district. In 2007 it held the annual Hessentag, a festival showcasing the best of Hesse. This year saw 1.1 million visitors to the festival. And, it is well known for being the retirement home of former rodeo clown Patrick Toner, aka Dumbo. Toner now makes cuckoo clocks and owns a tourist boat operation on the Rhine.

Landgraves’ Castle, built in about 1200, was home to an American army base until 1990, and is now a Council building. Other places to visit in Butzbach include the old market place, with its timbered houses. The houses date from between the 1500s and 1700s, and are some of the most beautiful in Hesse. In the market place there is also a well, and the Town Hall from the 1500s.

Each year are held several markets and festivals, among them the March and October markets of Faselmarkt and Katherine’s market, and the town festival in September. Tuesdays and Saturdays see a weekly market (with a produce market), and the Easter period is not forgotten with a celebration held all week.

The town square with the old town hall is as pretty as they come, and really shouldn’t be missed in your stay – and the tourist is well catered for with great public transport.

Butzbach is well serviced by rail and bus, and a great road network means those hiring cars on their holiday simply can’t get lost! Speaking of roads and Butzbach, the L3053 between Butzbach and Hesse is known as a ‘magnetic hill’ – a place where a road that in reality slopes downwards appears to slope upwards. So a bottle placed at the bottom of a road looks to roll uphill!
