Exploring Buffalo
Buffalo is often used as a gateway to the spectacular and awe-inspiring Niagara Falls, located only 40kms from the city. The falls draw millions of visitors to gaze at the thundering torrents of water cascading down, and you can get up close and personal on boat trips which take you within spraying distance.
Across the falls lies Canada, with its vastly different heritage and more liberal licensing laws. Lake Erie, which laps Buffalos shores, boasts many pleasure cruisers and even beaches which come alive during the summer months. To the north of the city is a hugely popular fun park based on Grand Island.
To the east of the city is another huge theme park, Six Flags Darien Lake Resort, which is packed on weekends. In this direction lies the largest shopping mall in western New York State, the Walden Galleria, which should provide enough of a fix for shopping addicts. Heading south by car, you will see agricultural farms and 19th century homesteads, as well as more modern industrial complexes.
The two university campuses of the State University of New York in Amherst and the Roycroft Campus in East Aurora have many attractions. In Amherst, there is the Centre for the Arts, the 1,750-seat Mainstage Theater, the 400-seat Drama Theater, the 370-seat Katharine Cornell Theater, and the 180-seat Black Box venue.
East Aurora contains the crafts colony founded by Elbert Hubbard in the 19th century. The university grounds also host the Elbert Hubbard Roycroft Museum, Roycroft Shops, Roycroft Inn and Roycroft Potters.
Thrillseekers can opt to visit Buffalo Airfield and fly in a Cessna aircraft. The 30- or 45-minute flights provide sweeping views of Niagara Falls and the Buffalo city environs. If you tire of urban pursuits, then head to the Tifft Nature Preserve on the shores of Lake Erie. This wilderness area contains extensive and well-maintained nature trails and a marsh which draws bird-watching enthusiasts and those who love soggy hikes.
