Mini guide to Buende
Buende is the English version of the German Bünde – where a‘ü’cannot be used, it is translated as Buende. Buende is located in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, in the Herford district (and is the second largest city in the district).
The town is divided into 12 subdivisions. Buende was first mentioned in documents as far back as 873, and has one of the oldest churches in Westphalia, the Laurentius church (or the Church of Saint Lawrence), dating back to about 778. The town is centred around this old Lutheran church, but there is a second church (Saint Paul’s) built in the late 1800s and with sandstone taken from the Weser River.
Several fossils about 30 million years of age have been found in the area and are now housed at the Doberg Museum (at Doberg) – including a jawbone and teeth of a whale, and the skeleton of a manatee.
Buende is known as ‘the cigar box of Germany’, as cigar production is one of the main industries in the town. Indeed, there are tobacco museums in Buende, with one being established in 1937 and offering many pipes from all over the world, some of them historic and quite valuable.
The world’s largest pipe, and longest cigar, are also found there in the ‘German Tobacco and Cigar Museum’. Buende is the base of the Westphalian tobacco industry, with other tobacco products such as pipes and tobacco jars being made in Buende. The other main industry in Buende is the manufacture of kitchen furniture.
The Heimatmuseum is home to a collection of peasant furniture and gives an insight into the life of a rural resident, particularly one involved in the production of flax.
