Car Rental Budapest - Exploring Budapest
The oldest and one of the most interesting parts of the city is Óbuda, remarkable for its Roman ruins, and small, quiet neighbourhoods which seem unchanged since the turn of the century. North of Óbuda is the Roman civilian town of Aquincum, the most complete in Hungary.
The hilly terrain along the Danube is picturesque and makes a a lazy boat ride worthwhile. There are several historical towns nestled among the hills, such as Szentendre (just 15 minutes by car north of Budapest), with its red-tiled roofs, narrow alleyways, brightly painted houses and orthodox churches. Originally built by Serbian settlers it is now an artists community.
Alternatively, travel back to the 13th century as you climb high atop a hill in Visegrád to Solomon's Tower, one of Central Europe's largest and best preserved Romanesque castle keeps.
Eger is a little further a field (2 hours drive), but is worth the trip. This beautifully preserved baroque town has a relaxed atmosphere, and enjoys a lovely location among two hill ranges. The 13th century castle and more recent cathedral are outstanding, and there is a lovely valley of vineyards nearby.
More than a daytrip, Lake Balaton is several hours drive south Europes largest lake, with several pretty resorts along its northern shores.
