Mini guide to Bruchsal
Situated in the state of Baden-Württemburg, in the Karlsruhe district, is the city of Bruchsal. It is the largest city in the district, and is famous for being the asparagus producing capital of Europe. It is also known as one of the economic capitals of the district. The city contains five boroughs, as well as Bruchsal proper.
The area surrounding Bruchsal is believed to have been settled as early as 4000 BC, in the Neolithic Age. Bruchsal itself is thought to have been inhabited from as early as 640 AD, near to where the current Saint Peter’s church is now located.
Bruchsal was completed destroyed during the 30 Years’ War in 1622, and in 1644 the French raided the city. In 1676 the French destroyed parts of the city, in 1689 it was again completed destroyed by the French. Following these raids and destruction, only 130 residents remained alive. By 1711 the city had recovered to some extent.
In 1806 the Marquess Amalie of Baden and her children (eight in all, six of whom were daughters) moved into the Bruchsal Baroque Chateau, and lived there until 1823. She was known as Europe’s mother-in-law, with her daughters marrying many rich and influential men. Her son married a niece of Napoleon’s wife (Josephine) under orders from Napoleon, and the niece gave birth to a stillborn son that was later – and to this day – to become the subject of rumours and innuendo.
It is believed the child was kept secret and dumped on the street when he was 16. He should have been the rightful heir to his father’s line, but it is believed that it was the child’s great-Uncle who succeeded as his mother kept the child a secret, allowing people to believe he had been born dead. Amalie’s daughter Princess Louise married Alexander I of Russia, after she and her sister were chosen at a young age by Alexander’s mother. Louise went on to become the wife of a Tsar.
Another daughter married and became the Queen of Sweden. Yet three others married the Duke of Braunschweig, the Regent of Bavaria and the Regent of Hessen-Darmstadt.
