Car Hire in Brest Downtown - Rue De Siam - Mini guide to Brest Downtown - Rue De Siam
With a population of 160,000, Brest ranks as the third largest town in Brittany situated close to its western tip and since the twelfth century it was the busiest naval port, only conceding its title in recent years; now coming in second to Toulon. Yet still it is a sizable commercial port with a lot of history, as it was used as a German submarine base during war times.
Brest is a destination with an abundance of attractions. At its very heart, the Rue de Siam cuts through to the southwest where a colossal drawbridge called the Pont de Recouvrance is situated. Standing at sixty four meters high it towers over the Penfeld River. This bridge links Brest and Recouvrance, a nearby district easily reachable in a hire car and the journey makes for a great scenic attraction.
Just to the south of the Pont de Recouvrance is a Château with huge round towers which now is home to the famed Préfecture Maritime, a museum devoted to seaports, nautical heritage which are a great day out for all. If you would prefer animal life to rigging and ships, take a trip down to the south-eastern reaches of Brest to the Port de Plaisance du Moulin Blanc where a wonderful marina named the Oceanopolis awaits you. This is a modern building sporting Europe’s largest aquarium containing exotic sea creatures guaranteed to keep the children’s attention and give you some peace and quiet.
