Bourne is a medium sized town in Massachusetts. It is located in Barnstable County and the population of the city is around 18,000 people. Bourne is an old town, first settled in 1640. It was once part of the town of Sandwich, becoming it’s own town in 1884. It was named after Jonathan Bourne. Bourne was a man who helped to settle the town, serving in the Massachusetts General Court.
The town is located in the northeast corner of Buzzard’s Bay. It is also the site of the nation’s oldest store, the Aptucxet Trading Post. A canal was built out of the two rivers that divided the state and is known as the Cape Cod Canal. The canal was formed to save time and because of the canal, the town of Bourne is considered the first town on the Cape. All three bridges on the canal are located in Bourne.
Bourne is the site of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy. The college is located on the southern mouth of the canal on the western shore. It is also the location of the Upper Cape Cod Regional Technical School. Being one of the oldest towns in the nation, Bourne has any historical site to check out.
