Mini guide to Boulder
Boulder revels in its reputation as one of the most desirable places to live in the American west. Its combination of high-tech industries, universities and outdoor pursuits in the nearby Rocky Mountains make it an attractive destination for residents and tourists alike.
Shoppers and diners should head to Pearl Street Mall - a pedestrianised paved walkway lined on both sides by numerous boutiques, stores and restaurants. It is also home to street entertainers and musicians parading their talents among the galleries. For a more rustic experience, visit the Boulder County Farmers Market, which is open from spring to autumn.
Nature lovers will relish exploring Boulder Creek Path. This trail snakes its way through town alongside Boulder Creek as it makes its way west into the mountains. Street crossings are eliminated by bridges and underpasses, making the path convenient for walkers, joggers, cyclists and skaters.
The path is approximately 26kms long, and it joins the Colorado University campus, several city parks and gardens, historical trails, and rafting and rock climbing areas. The path terminates at Four Mile Canyon.
The sprawling University of Colorado campus is referred to as The Hill by Boulder residents. It is nestled in the shadow of the great Flatiron Mountains, giving it a scenic setting. Interesting sights on campus are the Heritage Museum, which gives an interesting history of the university, and the Mary Rippon Outdoor Theatre, which hosts regular plays and productions and is home to the nationally renowned annual Colorado Shakespeare Festival in July and August.
The University of Colorado campus also contains three free art galleries: the CU Art Gallery, the UMC Art Gallery and the Andrew J Macky Gallery. The galleries house a range of permanent collections containing local and international works. The Boulder History Museum is located on University Hill in an historic building. It contains an impressive collection of over 20,000 local artefacts, and many more photos and historical documents.
