Exploring Boulder
Rocky Mountain National Park is a haven for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts. This 107,242-hectare reserve is a picture postcard of what mountain scenery should look like. Pristine mountain lakes abound and, while they are probably too cold for swimming in, they are perfect for canoeing.
A walk for the fitness-minded is the 13-kilometre trek to the top of Longs Peak. There are many campsites and lodges in the park. While camping, be wary of the wild wildlife, which includes wolves and bears.
Boulder relies heavily on the winter skiing industry, and a great place to go is Eldora Mountain Resort. Located about 32kms outside town, the resort caters for all levels of skiers and also has cross-country trails. A more famous Colorado ski resort is Aspen, which regularly plays host to film stars and other millionaires, and is also justifiably renowned for the quality of its slopes.
Cosmopolitan Denver is only a short drive away and has many interesting attractions to entice travellers. Places to visit include LoDo, with its many jazz clubs and restaurants, and art galleries housed in turn-of-the-century buildings. Other places to see include: the US Mint, where 10 billion coins are stamped yearly; the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, which houses an impressive collection of artefacts and an IMAX cinema; and Larimer Square, with its restored buildings and specialty shops.
The states second largest city is Colorado Springs, which has attractions such as the towering Pikes Peak; the Air Force Academy with its futuristic chapel; and the Broadmoor district with its pink-fronted Italian style hotel buildings and black swans.
