Initially, Bottrop was known as a mining center for its coal-tar derivatives and chemicals which led to it being established as a coal mining center and rail center. This city was chartered in 1921 and it was also a center for mining. In 1975, Bottrop combined with Gladbeck and Kirchhellen, after which Gladbeck separated and the district of Bottrop-Kirchhellen was formed in 1976.
Bottrop lies in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia on the Rhine-Herne canal. It is adjacent to Essen, Oberhausen, Gladbeck and Dorsten. Bottrop comes under the administration of the Munster region and accommodates a population of 118,975 in an area covering 100.7 km².
Since Bottrop had been a rail center in the past, this city is well connected by trains. Also lying in the centre of the Autobahn highways without junctions, this city can be reached easily by road too.
