Exploring Boston
New England is one of the prettiest regions of America and certainly worth exploring by car, but youll be exhausted before youve even left the greater Boston area.
North of the river is suburban Boston and the famous college town of Cambridge. The double whammy of Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) would makes it one of the most auspicious college etowns in the country and Harvard Square precinct is crammed with all the book stores, cafes, restaurants and shops you'd expect to find in a town that caters to 30,000 university students. The Museum of Natural History has an incredible display of over 800 life-like handblown glass flowers and plants.
Twenty kilometres northwest of Boston the historic neighborhood of Charlestown is a living museum of Boston's shipbuilding past. At the river's edge is the oldest commissioned ship in the US Navy, the USS Constitution. Nearby are the Bunker Hill monument and Monument Square. Lexington green is site of the first battle of the revolutionary war against England. Concord has a similar history and makes a pleasant daytrip, its centrepiece being David Thoreau's cabin on the shore of nearby Walden Pond.
Further afield, the town of Salem has an interesting bewitched past, while Marblehead is a good place to clear your head with a big hit of sea air.
A worthwhile day trip is beautiful Cape Cod, with its interesting past of fishing and whaling. Today it's better known as the playground of presidents and supermodels. Resembling the Cornish coastline, it has dozens of delightful little villages to stop off and admire.
