Fifteen kilometres northwest of Bonn is the exquisite Baroque palace Brühl, with history dating back to the Roman Empire.
On the southeastern outskirts of the city are the Siebengebirge (Seven Hills), an excellent hiking area with available parking.
The Kottenforst and Ennert forests provide large, open spaces to explore on the hills of both banks of the Rhine.
Highway 9 passes through the univerity to Bad Godesberg, with its relaxing mineral baths. Further along this road to the south is the picturesque town of Koblenz.
Also nearby is Cologne, a delightful city with Roman origins that is popular with tourists largely due to its world-famous museums, cosmopolitan atmosphere and lively night life, as well as gastronomic delights. The 13th century cathedral, the Dom, is its most famous landmark and central point, along with the Aldstadt, while Südstadt is full of stylish bars and retaurants.
