Car Hire Boise - Mini guide to Boise

Located in the western region of Idaho, Boise is the state's modest capital. The main attraction of this region, which has more wilderness area than any other state except Alaska, is its excellent range of outdoor recreational opportunities.

A great introduction to the town is provided by the replica 1890 puffing billy train. The train passes through historic districts, shopping areas and modern corporate centres and provides a pleasant and relaxing alternative to wandering the streets.

After getting your bearings, head for the excellent range of museums and cultural sights in and around Boise. The Idaho Historical Museum, Basque Museum and Cultural Center, and the Old Idaho Penitentiary all provide interesting insights into the history and culture of the region.

There are many art galleries around the town peddling northwestern art, but get a feel for the best by visiting the superb Boise Art Museum. Zoo Boise and the interactive exhibits of the Discovery Center of Idaho provide great amusement for families, as does the enthralling World Center for Birds of Prey located at the 500,000-acre Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area.

Many pleasant walks can be found along the 40kms of mostly-paved 'greenbelt' that connects Boise's larger downtown parks to the Boise River. The greenbelt path is perfect for jogging, cycling, relaxing and watching the water. Rafting, boating and great fishing are all available on the Boise River. After tiring yourself, relax and dine in one several quality restaurants offering a wide range of American and international cuisine.

In the foothills above Boise, the Ridge to Rivers Trail System connects public lands through private property with several non-motorised trails for more strenuous hiking and biking. Winter sports enthusiasts will love the relaxed atmosphere of the Bogus Basin area, with its 51 runs, 32kms of Nordic trails and night skiing.

Boise is located in the western region of Idaho. I-90 (from Salt Lake City) and I-84 (from Portland and Seattle) as well as smaller roads connect Boise to the rest of the state with beautiful scenic drives. Amtrak buses provide connections from Boise to their nearest rail service and Greyhound buses offer services between Idaho's major towns. Boise Airport (BOI), five kilometres from town, is serviced by daily domestic flights from all major airline hubs in the western states, as well as from Chicago and Minneapolis.

The major suburbs in Boise are: Beatty, Barber, Cloverdale, Collister, Eagle, Garden City, Hill Crest, Meridian, Perkins and Ustick.
