Bochum a town in western Germany was a town known for its employment opportunities in coal mines and factories in the past gave way to the car manufacturing industry including the Opel Astra. Bochum was initially mentioned in 1041 and obtained its town charter in the year 1321. Primarily, its population increased in the 1890’s because of the employment opportunities offered by the coal mines. After the decline of the coal industry, car making became a huge market which in turn provided employment for the large population.

Situated in the center of the Ruhr area this town is located in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia at an elevation of about 196m. Bochum covers an area of 145.4 km² containing a population of 376,586.

Being well connected to the Autobahn highways A40, A43, A44, this city is also accessible by the central station connecting it to the Deutsche bahn and the S-bahn. In addition the Dusseldorf airport is just 45 minutes away from Bochum.

Bochum provides its visitors with innumerable options for transportation within the city with tramways, public transportations and bus lines. It is associated with VRR transport system, BOGESTRA which is in affiliation with Gelsenkirchen and also an underground Stadtbahn line.

Apart from the town hall, other places of interest include Propsteikirche St. Peter and Paul, Blankenstein Castle, Zeiss Planetary, Marienkirche, musical Starlight express, Train museum and other churches. There also two Middle Age castles worth visiting.
