Located in the centre of the northern half of Alabama, Birmingham is easily accessed by air and road transportation. Birmingham International Airport provides direct service to 50 cities in the US, with numerous daily connections. Most international visitors will transit via one of the major Atlantic or Pacific coast air transportation hubs.

Birmingham is connected to the north and south by I-65, while access to the northeast and west is provided by I-11 and I-65. Another east-west option is provided to the south of the city, where I-31 heads from the east to the southwest of the state.

Birmingham is served by Amtrak’s Crescent route services (New York to New Orleans) and Sunset Limited runs (Florida to California).
