The Aquitaine and Pays Basque region, located in the southwest of France, has a distinctive culture and some interesting places to visit.
St Jean de Luz is a beautiful seaside resort and active fishing port not far from the Spanish border, with a lively and cosmopolitan atmosphere. The town center of St Jean de Luz has a medieval background, with Iberian and Moorish influences.
Bayonne, the capital of the region, at the junction of the rivers Adour and Nive, is a busy commercial town, with a long history. It features Roman fortifications, the imposing 14th C Cathedral Sainte-Marie and excellent Bonnat museum.
Hendaye is a frontier town with Spain and confined on the edge of both the Atlantic Ocean and Pyrenees Mountains. It has some decent beaches and an interesting medieval centre.
Anglet is a large commercial town, with two coastal quartiers Chiberta and Chambre d'Amour, both with long expanses of sandy surfing beaches which are part of the Cote Basque. Somewhat upmarket, its popular and accessible to the public non-the-less.
