Exploring Bergerac
Bergerac sits in the middle of a wine-producing region on the Dordogne River with the Mid-Pyrenees to the east, and is an attractive location from which to explore the area by car. There are 120 wine producers in the surrounding region, with Monbazillac lying to the south and the king of them all, Bordeaux, to the west.
About 1 hour, 30 minutes from Bergerac on the banks of the Garonne, near the Bay of Biscay, is the heart of the justly famed Bordeaux wine region. Tour the area’s wineries and sample some of the products. You can also watch the grape harvest in October.
A visit to the elegant city of Bordeaux itself is a must. It’s a stylish city with a lively cosmopolitan air and some of the best examples of 18th century architecture in the whole of France.
To see some of the nicest buildings, stroll along the river near the Quai de la Douane (Customs House Quay). Nearby, on Place de la Comédie, is the classical Grand Théâtre, and farther south are the twin steeples of Cathédrale St André. The city also has some impressive museums, including the Musée des Beaux-Arts (Fine Arts Museum).
A trip to the market town of Périgueux to the north should also be on your itinerary. As you approach the city, the imposing Cathédrale St Front stands tall over the red roofs of the town. Périgueux is surrounded by vegetable farms and vineyards, and the local cuisine is delicious. Visitors will be spoilt for choice by the number of restaurants, especially on the web of streets around the cathedral.
