Car Hire in Bergamo
Getting to Bergamo
Nestled in the foothills of the Alps, the Lombardy city of Bergamo lies 50kms northeast of Milan and is easily accessible by all means of transport.
Bergamo is served by Orio al Serio Airport, which has frequent flights to other Italian and European cities, including Ryanair flights from London. Orio al Serio has a shuttle bus which takes passengers into Bergamo every 30 minutes.
Nearby Milan may be a better choice for those arriving by air. Malpensa Airport is primarily used for transatlantic carriers with non-stop flights from New York. It's about 50kms northwest of the city and is a popular stopover en route to the Middle East and Asia. Linate Airport is used for flights within Italy and Europe, and is located about 7kms east of the city centre.
The main motorway for cars journeying to Bergamo from Milan is the A4, which is the principal east-west route into and out of Milan. Milan is the main transport centre for Lombardy, with the A8 coming in from the northwest, the A1 from the southeast and the A7 from the southwest. The A22 is another major north-south artery, running just east of Lake Garda.
Trains arrive in Bergamo from Milan once every hour, depositing passengers in the centre of the Lower Town at Piazza Marconi. The trip takes an hour and costs 5. Again, if travelling from destinations outside Lombardy, Milan may be your best option. The mammoth Stazione Centrale is served hourly from Genoa, Turin, Venice and Florence. Trains from Rome also arrive every hour, but services from Naples and other southern cities are less frequent.
The bus station in Bergamo is across from the train station. Buses arrive from Milan once every 30 minutes.
