Car Hire Belluno - Mini guide to Belluno
Located in the northern Italian region of Veneto (north of Venice), in the province of the same name is the town and capital of Belluno. The name is thought to derive from the Celtic for ‘splendid hill’ (‘belo-dunum’, or it could mean ‘shining city’; it was known in ancient times as Bellunum), and the town is located in a valley in a position lending itself to the name – surrounded by mountains (including the Dolomite Alps to the north, and the pre-Alps to the south)) dominating the city and located at the joining of two rivers (the Torrente Ardo and the Piave), it is ideally located, being both protected and well-nourished.
Because of this the town became an important military base for the Romans after its settlement in about 220 BC. When the Roman Empire fell, it passed through several sets of hands, before the ownership by a count-bishop saw it gain a castle and walls. After it gave itself over to become part of the Republic of Venice in 1404, the city became an important transport hub on the rover Piave. When the Venetian republic fell, it passed into French, then Austrian possession, until Italy claimed it in 1861. Belluno has many attractions that can be visited by the tourist. The ‘Duomo’, a cathedral dating back to the 1400s, has a bell tower designed by Italian architect Filippo Juvarra. Many of Juvarra’s works can be seen in and around Italy.
The Bishop’s Palace, built in 1190, is a spectacular work, as are some of the other churches and buildings (for example San Rocco from the 1500s, San Pietro from the 1300s and several ancient gates in the old city walls). Interestingly, the diocese of Belluno contains about 280 churches, so you’re not short of one should you need to worship, or simply admire.
