Car Rental Belgium - Exploring Belgium
Belgium is tiny and can be easily crossed in a day. Its heavily urbanized and better known for its cities than countryside, however some of the smaller towns, and a chance to escape the tourist bustle, make a car worthwhile. Convenient border arrangements also make it easy to head into France, Germany or the Netherlands.
Ghent was once one of Europes most important medieval cities and is steeped in history, particularly rebellion. Although not as photogenic as Bruges, it is a more accurate reflection of what Middle Ages Europe may have looked like and its also a lot quieter and more manageable. The town has a belfort well worth climbing and the impressive Sint-Baafskathedral.
In the town of Ypres is the Menin Gate, a tragic memorial to 55,000 British and Allied troops who lost their lives in Flanders during WWI.
Near the city of Liege, is Belgiums oldest town, Tongeren, dating from 15 BC. Its surrounded by Roman and medieval walls and has an important collection of Gallo-Roman remains.
Belgium's southeast corner is often overlooked, but the deep river valleys and high forests of the Ardennes region are one of the countrys loveliest areas. Driving through the rolling hills, or meandering along the Meuse, Lesse and Ourthe valleys, you can discover delightful villages and citadels, of which Namur is perhaps the best example. The area is also well known for producing dairy products.
