Barcelos, in northern Portugal, is best known as the birthplace of Portugal’s most widely-recognised symbol – the Barcelos Cockerel. Legend tells of a pilgrim who was wrongly accused of stealing and was sentenced to die. He plead his innocence to the judge, saying that the judge’s dinner, a roasted rooster, would get up and crow to prove he was not guilty. The pilgrim’s life was spared when it did crow. Since that medieval tale, the cockerel and Portugal have been intertwined.

Nowadays, this walled market town is best known for its large Thursday market which you can visit in your car hire. The event is held in Portugal’s largest public square: Campo Da Republica. It is one of Europe’s largest markets and offers local craft pieces, many of which are ceramic.

Just opposite the church is Solar dos Pinairos, a 15th century gothic mansion.
