Exploring Baltimore
Annapolis, Maryland's capital city is a beautiful colonial maritime centre a short drive from Baltimore. Relax and roam the 18th century streets, watch boats in the harbour, check out the State House or read on the St. John's College lawn.
The town of Frederick, about 45 minutes west of Baltimore, is also worth a visit. It boasts one of Marylands best-preserved historic districts, with many 18th and 19th century homes, churches and other buildings. Theres plenty to see, including: the Barbara Fritchie House and Museum, the Roger Brooke Taney House, the National Museum of Civil War Medicine and the Childrens Museum of Rose Hill Manor Park.
West, on the I-70 from Downtown, lies the town of Cumberland. It was once a major transportation centre, and the meeting point of three major modes of travel during the 19th-century: the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and the National Pike.Today, remnants of all three remain. A stretch of the canal is being restored and will afford visitors the chance to ride in a mule-pulled barge. A scenic train, the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, runs from Cumberland up the mountains into Frostburg. Also, the National Pike still runs through town, though today its called Route 40. Several state parks and forests are nearby, the most noteworthy being Rocky Gap State Park.
