Balingen:Balingen is the capital of Zollernalbkreis of Germany. It is located in the Swabian Alb and is home to the Ideal and Bizerba companies. It was in 863 that mention of Balingen was first made as the possession of lords of Haigelrloch. In 1403, it was sold to the County of Wurttemberg where it was maintained as the residence of its chancellor till 18th century.
The city was destroyed by a fire in 1809 wherein the State’s master builder redesigned the city in a new style. The old town that had developed naturally was replaced by a strict and geometrical plan with streets being almost symmetrical. The church and market place were placed at its center in front of the Protestant church. And together with areas around the church and the north and south sides of Friedrichstrasse bordering them, this forms the pedestrian precinct on which the planning of the city is focused.
The streets of Balingen have marked parking bays that are laid lengthwise on pavements of equal width. Bends, diagonals and right angled parking spaces were avoided to make the streets look wider and spacious. It was in the year 1870 that Balingen became part of the unified Germany.
The market place hosts a weekly flower and vegetable market, along with other events. There are many wells and a stream running through Balingen. Though the idea of designing a new water course was thought of, it was rejected for the high costs of redesigning streets and squares. However it was practically at the last minute that donations were made for the plan of ‘Art Aqua’ in Bietigheim-Bissingen to be put in effect.
There are two water courses that run through the pedestrian precinct to the north and south of the market place of Balingen. These water courses have various water features that are half art and half amusement. They are loved by the young and are a real eye-catcher of the city center.
