Exploring Baja California
Baja California encompasses many quaint villages and cosmopolitan cities and is best explored by car. Rosarito, known mostly as a weekend and summer tourist destination, is within commuting distance of San Diego or Chula Vista, in California. The town is a good place to wile away a few hours swimming or horseback riding at the beach. If you're hungry, you can munch on fish tacos or tamales from one of the many family-run stands along Boulevard Benito Juárez, the town's main strip.
A few kilometres south of Rosarito lies the seaside production site of 1997's mega blockbuster Titanic. A 240-metre replica of the ship was constructed for filming, and many local residents served as extras in the movie. In May 2001, Fox Studios opened the lot to the public as a sort of theme park on cinematography called Foxploration, including a makeshift Titanic museum with partial sets and numerous props, including lifeboats, furnishings and crates from dockside scenes.
Alternatively, San Felipe is a winter vacation centre. Its weather is excellent in the fall and spring, and also nice in the winter.
Ensenada has a warm Mediterranean climate that is suitable for year round living. It offers duty-free shopping, wonderful dining and superb fishing. To truly experience Ensenada, you should stop by the indoor/outdoor fish market at the northernmost corner of the harbour. Outside the market are several stalls selling the famous Baja fish taco, consisting of strips of freshly caught deep-fried fish wrapped in corn tortillas and topped with shredded cabbage, cilantro, salsa and various other condiments.
South of Ensenada, 45 minutes away along the rural Punta Banda Peninsula, is La Bufadora, a natural sea spout in the rocks. With each incoming wave, water is forced upward through the rock, creating a geyser whose loud grunt gave the phenomenon its name - 'buffalo snort'.
Puerto Nuevo, 19kms south of Rosarito on the Old Ensenada Highway, is a tiny fishing town with nearly 30 restaurants, all serving exactly the same thing. Some 40 years ago the fishermen's wives started serving local lobsters from the kitchens of their simple shacks, and many eventually built small dining rooms on to their homes or constructed restaurants. The result is a lobster lover's paradise, where a feast of lobster, beans, rice, salsa, limes and tortillas costs around US$15.
