Documentation of the name Toelz is found in records of the 12th century. Then the name ‘Reginried’ was used to depict a settlement belonging to the Tegernsee monastery and is said to be similar to Reid in western Muhlfeld. It was in the 14th century that Toelz became a crossroad for salt and lumbar traffic on Isar.

It was since the retreat of the glaciers at the end of the Ice Age that there has been proof in archaeology of continuous occupation of Bad Toelz. There is proof of inhabitants from the Hallstatt culture, Roman Raetia and the Romanized Celts here.

Bad Toelz is a historic medieval town that is famous for its spas and the spectacular views it offers of the Alps. It was in the middle of the 19th century that Toelz started focusing on the healing properties its natural springs offer. This is when Bad Toelz became a cure and spa town and it was in 1899 that the town became known as Bad Toelz. Its iodine rich waters are known for its soothing and healing powers.

Bad Toelz is also famous as a pilgrimage site where there is the festival for Saint Leonard of Noblac on November 6. A major attraction of the town is the Stadtpfarrkirche, a German late-Gothic architecture church that was built in 1466.
