Car Hire Avellino - Mini guide to Avellino

Forty-Two kilometres north east of Naples is the town of Avellino, in the region of Campania. Originally known as Abellinum, and founded by the martyr Saint Sabinus in the second century, some sites of the old city (walls and amphitheatre) can still be seen just out of the new town, to the east. Some remains of Lombard Castle can also be seen, in the Piazza Castello (Castle Square). The modern day town is the capital of the province of Avellino.

When Mount Vesuvius erupted and caused an earthquake in 346, there existed an expensive old Roman villa, built in 129 BC, that was subsequently abandoned. Over the ruins of this villa was built a cathedral, and this is a popular attraction in Avellino. The town has suffered from earthquakes and volcanic eruptions for many years, so many of the old buildings have been destroyed and as a consequence the town is mainly modern. The town was also bombed in 1943 by the Allies in an attempt to stop the Nazi retreat. Avellino was Christianised around 500AD, and has about 90 churches and chapels today.

A third of the Italian hazelnut market comes from the Avellino province, and the chestnut and nut factories in Avellino are economically important. Wines such as Fiano di Avellino, Aglianico, Greco di Tufo and Taurasi are produced in Avellino, too, and are internationally known.

There is also a 10-12th century castle that should be included on any tourist plan. And just outside Avellino is a Benedictine convent and shrine for pilgrims, at Monte Vergine. At the summit is a sanctuary of the Virgin, and a miraculous picture attributed to Saint Luke – a festival for whom is held every September.
