Car Rental Austria - Exploring Austria
Austria is a great country for exploring by car, it has few imposing cities and some wonderful countryside dotted with fairy tale castles. Its southwestern corner is extremely Alpine and offers great summer hiking and touring as well as winter skiing.
The Danube is prettier outside of Vienna, especially at the delightful ancient village of Krems with its Melk monastery. Baden is a stately and popular spa town on the edge of the Vienna woods. Also close to Vienna is Lake Neusiedl, particularly the little town of Rust.
Gurk is a curious little town in central Austria, famous for its incredible Romanesque cathedral dating from 1140.
The best scenery in Austria is found in the southwest, beyond Salzburg, particularly in the Arlberg region. Innsbruck is the main town, a charming place to visit in any season. St. Anton is launching point for the string of ski resorts, and there are options to suit all abilities and budget. In summer, the hiking is fantastic, the weather reliable, and the scenery unbeatable. There is also quite a lively night life during the ski season.
The Eisriesenwelt Caves are some of the largest ice caves in the world and very accessible to the public, though entry is regulated and they are closed during the winter months. Driving through the main valley, en route to Switzerland, is really worthwhile. Especially well known is the Grossglockner Road, a fantastic 50-kilometre mountain tour between Zell am See and ending in Heiligenblut, providing access to Italy. Highlights include Hohe Tauern National Park and Pasterze Glacier.
